Monday Night Suppers
On January 24th, Central Coast Seafood had the pleasure of participating in Artisan’s Monday Night Supper series.
This three course family style menu showcased Idaho Trout, Freshwater Steelhead and Black Mussels. Each entree was mouth watering delicious!
Most importantly, it was an honor to have the opportunity to share with the guests the story behind each seafood item. Sharing in the same dedication to sustainable seafood, this night was truly inspiring! I commend Artisan for developing an avenue to educate patrons while still providing a gourmet dining experience.
The menu is posted on our Facebook page:

Employee Spotlight

Chris Batlle
No, that’s not mispelled...it really is spelled that way....
Born and raised in Southern California, Chris Batlle grew up near the ocean and developed a love for the sea early on. When he wasn’t surfing, he was either fishing or unloading vessels. Chris and his wife moved to Morro Bay in 2009 with the intention of settling down to raise a family on the Central Coast. It didn’t take long for Chris to find a career in the field that he loves. Working at the docks in Morro Bay, he learned the logistics of unloading fleets of boats and the many dynamics of working with the fishermen. We’ve been blessed to have Chris join our team at Central Coast Seafood where he utilizes his excellent managerial skills running our transportation fleet and production team. He’s an awesome addition to our stellar team and we hope you have the opportunity to meet him in person.

Traceability
Traceability is the new buzzword in seafood sustainability, but what does it really mean?
All food products need to be traceable back to their source if a food recall or contamination occurs; however, traceability that includes sustainability information takes things a step further. When sustainability information for a seafood product is also traceable, it means that the product can be traced back to an individual vessel with a certain gear type, or a farm with known harvest and management practices. It also means that the product’s source can be verified as legal, an important factor given that Illegal, Unregulated, and Unreported (IUU) fishing is a problem in many fisheries.
If you buy seafood from a company that makes great environmental claims but cannot trace their sustainability information, you may be paying more for “handline” or “dayboat” tuna that hasn’t been verified as such. When a company does trace their sustainability information, it has been verified that you are buying a legal handline caught tuna, as opposed to a less sustainable, possibly IUU, longline caught tuna. This is how real change on the water is made and why you should feel more comfortable buying seafood from a supplier with fully traceable product, and pay more for the verified product.
Central Coast Seafood is again a leader in this movement. CCS, along with FishWise, are implementing a traceability policy for all products. This policy asks vendors to supply detailed information to CCS about the sources and supply chain of each shipment of product, which CCS and FishWise will verify as being accurate. This will allow for further assurance that all products are safe, legal, and their sustainability properly labeled. If you have questions about this new area of work please contact us.

Industry Update
We received this letter from CleanFish regarding their Laughing Bird Shrimp from Belize.

Laughing Bird Fresh Shrimp
CleanFish is saddened to inform you that as of January 28, 2011 fresh Laughing Bird shrimp from Belize will no longer be available.
Belize Aquaculture Ltd has been our sole provider of fresh Laughing Bird. On February 16 last year, Sir Barry Bowen, the founder of Belize Aquaculture, was killed in the crash of a private airplane he was piloting. His estate has elected to stop operating the shrimp farm. They are actively seeking new investment partners, and, the possibility does remain that they will resume production later this year. However, no definite timeline has been determined for resuming production.
Belize Aquaculture is in the process of harvesting, processing and freezing the shrimp from all of its ponds. CleanFish will be purchasing a sizable quantity of frozen inventory. Once the harvesting is complete and we know what is available, CleanFish will, in turn, share that information.
CleanFish is also pleased to announce a new relationship with a consortium of small shrimp farms in Costa Rica. As a country, Costa Rica promotes itself as an eco-destination. For example, Costa Rica implemented laws protecting mangrove forests prior to the construction of any shrimp farms in that country. Our first container of frozen Costa Rican shrimp is scheduled to arrive in Miami before the end of January.
We do anticipate being able to offer fresh Laughing Bird-Costa Rican shrimp in April.

This was very sad news for us, however we are happy to announce an update:
Belize Aquaculture is planning to resume production in February. With a minimum grow out time of four months, the earliest availability of fresh Laughing Bird Shrimp is sometime in June.
. . . . . . . . .
In the meantime, we have stocked up on as much of the current production as we could and it is now in frozen form. Additionally, we also have a Peeled and Deveined Rock Shrimp (61/70) that is an excellent substitution.
We’ll continue to keep you informed as we learn more.
Help Us Help You!
Central Coast Seafood has long been a supporter of environmentally friendly technologies in both the production and distribution industry.
With the goal of reducing waste and improving protection of our product, we have been distributing your orders in reusable containers. These large durable plastic bins provide better insulation and greater protection for the product, as well as being sturdy and easier to handle. This also reduces packaging waste resulting in lower negative impact to the environment; and a reduction in trash expense for you, the customer, by negating the need to throw away used boxes.
Here’s Where You Can Help!
In order for us to maintain our supply of these reusable containers, we need your help. Our drivers will either unload your product at delivery, or give you the option to keep the container and have it picked up on your next order. Either way, it is imperative that we retrieve them on a regular basis to maintain our supply and avoid additional charges. We know how tempting it can be to keep them for your own storage needs, however that would result in additional costs which we are trying to minimize as much as possible. If you have a “collection” of these containers, please contact our office and we’ll schedule a pick up appointment within 24 hours. Simply call
805-462-3474.
We appreciate your help in this very important environmental matter.
