Seafood Summit Review
Taking the Steps to Ensure Our Seafood Supplies are Safe and Healthy for Many Generations to Come.
|
|
Recently, I was asked to participate in the Sustainable Seafood Summit held in San Francisco, CA on October 20-21, 2009. It was an event that featured participants with backgrounds including environmental groups such as Greenpeace and International Seafood Sustainability Program, the USDC, the FDA, buyers from national chains such as Kroger and Whole Foods, fish processors from around the world, distributors and aqua culturists from over 10 different countries. The wealth of knowledge and experience present was very impressive. While topics ranged from the science that goes into producing environmentally sustainable feeds for aquaculture to traceability and verification of responsible catch methods for wild production, the underlying current was the need to improve the handling of the resources that most of our companies and our customers rely on for generations to come.
Some of the innovative items discussed included:
- An Aquaculture Operation in Spain which also served as a natural bird refuge
- A Shrimp farm in Madagascar focusing on indigenous product that served to supplement wild populations
- Discussions on measure ti improve accountability and traceability among distributors which focused on adding items such as Catch Methods to Country of Origin requirements.
When trying to source high quality and sustainable products, catch method becomes a large factor in comparison shopping. For example, Hook & Line caught Mahi carries a strong sustainability rating (& superior quality and shelf-life) while a long line Mahi from the same origin can carry a red rating because of the by-catch issues involved with the production. Most often this will cause a difference in price somewhere in the range of $0.25 to $0.50 a pound, however it is well worth the additional cost. The Catch Method isn't always provided by the suppliers, and will make comparison shopping among distributors an "apples to oranges" affair. A simple additional requirement of disclosure (as we already do) can eliminate the confusion and ensure customers are comparing like items.
The most encouraging portion of the event was the strong commitment of all the companies and groups in attendance to not only improve our industry as a whole, but also ensure that every step and precaution is made to ensure the sustainable future of our seafood supplies.
