The Catch - October 2009

The Catch Title

October is

National Seafood Month

It's time to celebrate the treats of the ocean!

We at Central Coast Seafood enjoy celebrating the many benefits of seafood consumption, and October is the perfect opportunity to do so as it's been labeled National Seafood Month since 1990.  Aside from the fact that seafood is rich in protein and Omega-3's, it's also low in cholesterol and fat.  Check out the delicious product spotlights we have highlighted for this month.  We're certain you'll enjoy them!

Sustainable...Green...Environmentally Friendly...
Have you heard enough catch-phrases and marketing strategies yet?  Wonder who is serious and who's not?  Central Coast Seafood cares about the movement because we want our products to last.  In fact, we'd like all seafood to be available on menus forever!  We'd also like to see fishing communities thrive, preserving that human culture while protecting the aquatic ecosystems they depend on.

With this movement in mind, Giovanni Comin, President of Central Coast Seafood, is participating in an international summit on October 20th and 21st in San Francisco.  Over 200 delegates from around the world will come together to share ideas and challenges faced by fishermen, harvesters, vendors, governing agencies, grocers and even retail markets to work together.  Giovanni will be sharing his expertise and historical observation of San Luis Obispo's fishing industry.  Protecting the sources of our product isn't just a slogan, it's about protecting our livelihood and maybe yours!

Seared ScallopsFresh Day Boat Scallops
yellowratingYellow Rating by
FishWiseTM & Seafood Watch

"Day Boat" refers to boats that fish for scallops just for the day, rather than the traditional method of dredging for up to 10 days before returning to harbor.

Our supplier, Raw Seafoods Inc., is a family owned and operated business founded in the heart of one of the world's largest fishing ports, Historic New Bedford, Massachusetts.  Specializing in scallop production, the majority of their scallops are sourced from their local fishing fleet, which enables them to provide us with the highest quality North Atlantic sea scallops year round.

Scallops have a mild sweet flavor with a soft delicate texture that can be enjoyed by all!

Health Tip:  4 ounces of scalops contain 33.33% of the daily value Vitamin B12, which helps promote cardiovascular health.

Known as the "Better Fish", Australis Barramundi is farmed in the US. One of the world's finest eating fish, Barramundi's succulent flesh is prized for its sweet flavor, delicate texture and remarkable versatility.  Only Australis Barramundi is loaded with Omega-3 fatty acids, contains NO mercury or other contaminants, and is raised without hormones, colorants or antibiotics.  Australis' revolutionary, non-polluting indoor farming system in rural Massachusetts is considered "the gold standard" of sustainable aquaculture.

Health Tip:  Barramuni is an Aboriginal word meaning 'river fish with large scales'.  It's an excellent source for the following:  Omega 3's, Niacin, Magnesium, Vitamin B12, Potassium and Phosphorus.

Spiny-LobsterCalifornia Spiny Lobsters

  Green Rating by
 FishWiseTM & Seafood Watch

California fishermen have been trapping Spiny Lobsters (also known as rock lobster) since the 1800's along the coast of San Luis Obispo, California to Rosalia Bay in Baja California, Mexico.  These lobsters have a tender, tasty, succulent white meat found mainly in the tail.  This is an excellent local option to have on your fall menu as the season runs from October to March.

Note:  We're excited to announce that our local season opens on October 8th, 2009.

Here's a Tip:  The Spiny Lobsters have sharp points that offer good protection from predators, so we advise you wear gloves when handling them.

Blue BinHelp Us Help the Environment
Central Coast Seafood has long been a supporter of environmentally friendly technologies in both the production and distribution industry.  With the goal of reducing waste and improving protection of our product, we have been distributing your orders in reusable containers.   These large durable plastic bins provide better insulation and greater protection for the product, as well as being sturdy and easier to handle.  This also reduces packaging waste resulting in lower negative impact to the environment; and a reduction in trash expense for you, the customer, by negating the need to throw away used boxes.

Here's where you can help!
In order for us to maintain our supply of these reusable containers, we need your help.  Our drivers will either unload your product at delivery, or give you the option to keep the container and have it picked up on your next order.  Either way, it is imperative that we retrieve them on a regular basis to maintain our supply and avoid additional charges.  We know how tempting it can be to keep them for your own storage needs, however that would result in additional costs which we are trying to minimize as much as possible.  If you have a "collection" of these containers, please contact our office and we'll schedule a pick up appointment within 24 hours.

We appreciate your help in this very important environmental matter.
Please contact us for your next seafood order.

Seafood Sustainability Rating Color Guide

Items printed in GREEN ink are a BEST choice because they are abundant, well-managed and caught or farmed in environmentally friendly ways.

Items printed in BLACK ink have a "Yellow" rating, meaning they are Good Alternative options, but there are concerns with how they're caught or farmed - or with the health of their habitat due to other human impacts.

Products printed in RED are caught or farmed in ways that harm other marine life or the environment.

Here's an Idea...
Bacon-Wrapped Scallops
Served with crisp greens
Bacon Wrapped Scallop

We suggest you pre-cook the bacon to a point that it will still wrap around the scallop to prevent the scallop from being over cooked.  Of course, using a dry-pack scallop is ideal for getting the perfect crust on the scallop.

Conveniently, we offer scallops and bacon.  Finish the perfect dish with a sweet pan sauce made from mango lemonade and top it off with fruit salsa.

Mmmmmm That's Delicious!
